Bag the Bags: Earth Day...

SR's Jim Sabataso talked up the latest event in SR and Rutland City SEED's Bag the Bag campaign on VPR this morning. Jim spoke with Nina Keck about how SR has partnered with Rutland High School's Environmentally Conscious & Active Club to hand out free handmade reusable bags in the Downtown Rutland Plaza this Earth Day. The event is intended to raise awareness about plastic bag use, and remind people to choose reusable bags whenever possible.

Join the Way to Go Challenge!

Do something good for you and good for the environment this spring:  join the Way to Go! Commuter Challenge.

Join Vermonters from across the state as we leave our cars at home during the week of May 4 – 8th.  This annual event helps Vermonters reduce pollution from transportation, save money at the pump and improve their physical health.

According to the 2005-2007 American Community Survey 3-Year Estimates, 79% of workers in Rutland County commuted to work by driving alone. The average commuting time was 19 minutes.  Last year’s Way o Go participants saved over 10,000 gallons of gas (nearly $40,000 worth at last spring’s prices!) and prevented over 200,000 pounds of air pollution.   You can help reduce pollution by trying a new way to get to work or school, whether for one day or all five, during the week of May 4-8th. Bike, walk, carpool, or take the bus.

Sign up at www.waytogovt.org!   For more information you can also contact Susan Schreibman at susan@rutlandrpc.org or Sara Gilbert at sgilbert@rutlandrpc.org or call the Rutland Regional Planning Commission (802) 775-0871.

SR Media Roundup

SR co-chair Carol Tashie talked up some of our upcoming projects on PEG-TV's FYI program last week. Check out the video here (search for "FYI: Sustainable Rutland 4-2-09").

Also, check out a couple interesting articles we came across over this past week. Both deal with how communities repurpose shopping malls/strip malls after the boxes move out. The topic seems especially relevant with today's news of Sports Legends restaurant closing at the mall With Cyberstation, that makes 2 mall closings in the last week.
